“You the date?” A woman who looked to be no older than her mid-twenties was hovering over where I sat inhaling the omelet Charlie had slid under my nose at around nine. She had long, wavy red hair and bright blue eyes that made her appear doll-like. I’d seen her likeness in several pictures decorating Charlie’s apartment. “Wow, you really are supermodel-hot. Can’t say I blame her for taking the late-night-rendezvous risk.”

I glanced up at Charlie, and watched her eyes go wide. She fiddled with the scarf around her neck and glared at me, like she was begging me to understand.

Weirdly, I did.

Her friends knew she’d had a date, they didn’t know that date, and they didn’t know that he was actually a vampire.

“Yeah,” Charlie said as she brought two plates over for her friend; the first identical to mine, the second stacked with dinosaur-shaped pancakes. I found myself strangely jealous that I’d only gotten one meal when this girl was getting two. “He is.”

The woman wiggled her brows at her and shimmied her shoulders, like I wasn’t sitting less than a foot away from her. “Cute. Way more so than I’d imagined. You going to introduce us, or just make him sit here forever, feeling awkward and out of place?”

She winked at me, and it was then that I noticed a small child wrapped around her legs. He was studying me with the sort of focus I normally only expected from adult men back at Headquarters—assessing, clinical, critical. He was more terrifying than the woman he was attached to.

“Er, right,” Charlie said, glancing between the two of us. “Mer, this is my date—” her face paled suddenly, her eyes wide as they lingered on mine.

For a moment, I was afraid the fanghole had made an appearance in the bar. I gripped the blade hidden in my jacket holster, ears peeled for any unfamiliar sound.

It was only after a familiar voice yelled, “Bishop,” that I realized her panic was from not knowing my name.

“And I’m Dani,” Dani said as she walked over. She waved her hand over me casually, like I was an exhibit in a museum she was discussing with strangers. “His friend. But I wasn’t invited on the date, if that’s what you’re wondering.” She exhaled, blonde hair flying around her face as she grinned at the three of us. “Anyway, nice to meet you, Mer,” she ducked down to the child and saluted, “Captain.”

The child broke into a wide grin that stretched all the way to his eyes.

“You’ve been gone for a while.” Charlie’s eyes narrowed and I knew she was looking for a sign as to whether or not Dani had any luck with tracking the fanghole.

She’d never confront the fanghole without me, but she’d volunteered to take hiking duty to see if there was anything suspicious in the area—any abandoned buildings being squatted in, any sign of a vehicle that didn’t match the residents of this place.

“Beautiful place, can you blame me for meandering on a long walk? Plus, if I’m being honest, I got a little bit lost.
